IQ won’t get you there
Most of my life, I’ve prided myself on getting a lot of things done. I have a good amount of know-how and broad enough skills to operate like a swiss army knife. I was a bit of a star player in my days. I started working at the age of 14 and wowed all my bosses in any job I held from retail management, customer service, and administrative roles.
If you’re like me, you’ve arrived because your skills, knowledge, and experience accelerated you to where you are today. We call this IQ. But when you step into leadership, you’ll soon learn IQ alone isn’t enough. In fact, IQ is assumed, and there are a whole new set of “Q’s” that are needed such as EQ (emotional intelligence), LQ (leadership intelligence), and CQ (cultural intelligence) to name a few.
Shift from smarts to trust. Perhaps the greatest commodity you have to offer in your professional career is your skills. As a high-level leader, though, it’s no longer your skills, it’s trust. Trust is the basis of leading a team, effectively dealing with disagreement and conflict, and remaining humble enough to learn the narratives of people who differ from us.
Your IQ might have gotten you here, but to go to the next level and lead effectively, trust is the best commodity you and I have to offer.
How would the focus on trust shift how you lead your teams and business?
Summary
You’re skills got you this far but you’ll need more than skills to succeed in this next season.
The key shift in great leadership is moving from smarts to trust.
Trust is the best commodity you have to offer those around you.
